My Grandfather, Fred Moore, his brother Harold, and Mr Byrne owned silk stores throughout Queensland

My Grandfather, Fred Moore, his brother Harold, and Mr Byrne owned silk stores throughout Queensland. One of their shops, The Silk Store, was located in the Brisbane Arcade. I discovered this fact in an article in the newspaper, The Brisbane Courier, 29 November, 1924 which tells us that because the shop in the Brisbane Arcade was going so well the owners decided to open another store in the Rothwell’s Building in Edward St. The article says “the silk stores are notable as the only ones of their kind in Brisbane, carrying only silks and offering a range of qualities and patterns and colours that is remarkable for completeness”. This early silk store was the beginning of a long and significant tradition in the Brisbane Arcade involving wonderful fabrics and fashion. Jan Stenton (née Moore)
