HISTORY
Few shopping arcades can lay claim to such a fascinating history. The beginnings of the Brisbane Arcade involve murder, scandal, insanity and a deathbed confession.
Built in 1923 for Dr James Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne, Brisbane Arcade was the original site of the Mayne family home. James’ and Emelia’s father Patrick ran a butcher shop in Queen Street where the Colorado store is now.
Heritage listed, Brisbane Arcade is packed with architectural features befitting a traditional European shopping arcade including Edwardian Baroque style street facades, original terrazzo stairs, balustrades and dado panelling.
Brisbane Arcade continues to be operated today in its original form by the Trustees of the estate of Dr James O’Neil Mayne and Miss Mary Emelia Mayne and operating proceeds benefit the University of Queensland Medical School and Medical Research.
